D. Vermont house

15 West Main Street 1850 Greek Revival style

Built as an inn, restaurant, and tavern, this stately landmark was a way station for the stagecoach that ran between Bennington and Brattleboro. It hosted the first Old Home Week celebration dinner in 1890, and its porch has served as the judges’ stand for viewing parade float entries. In later years, the third floor was used as a dance hall; its springboard floor, constructed by notched sub flooring, provided a cushioned surface for dancers. Many such dance halls were built in hotels and private clubs around the country in the early 1900s.
