E. old telephone exchange

Wilmington’s first “traffic signal”

11 West Main Street 1834 Greek Revival style

Built as a private home, this building contained the local telephone exchange in the 1950s. It featured two switchboards and a cot, as operators had to be available 24 hours a day. The original wide pine boards remain in place under the newer floor. The center chimney is still visible on the main floor as are the original wood shakes in the attic. Its hand-hewn beams probably were recycled from a dismantled building on Lisle Hill.
