I. CHILDS TAVERN/CRAFTS INN

Like its neighbor Memorial Hall, this hotel was financed by Adna Child’s son Frederick and designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. The Childs family owned the hotel until 1911 when it sold the business to the Crafts family. Summer visitors who arrived in Wilmington by train spent extended vacations at the hotel. The spacious front porch was a popular place for guests to socialize and enjoy the fresh, country air. Well known visitors to the inn include Norman Rockwell, President Calvin Coolidge, and President William HowardTaft. the tavern became known as the Crafts Inn in the 1950s.
