N. Universalist Church

12 South Main Street

1835 Greek Revival style

Early meetings of the Universalist Church, established about 1830, were held in member’s homes and later in the first Masonic Hall on the old town common on Lisle Hill. In 1835 the church purchased land in the new town center from prominent citizen, Charles K. Field, “to build a church and enough land to walk around.” The steeple was a gift from the Childs family, and the stained glass windows were purchased as family memorials.
