O. O Ware
1 East Main Street 1880 Greek Revival style
Constructed in 1880 by Orin O. Ware, this building combined a grocery and a clothing store - and the post office for a short time - on the ground floor. Living quarters occupied the second floor. From 1884 to 1904, the Masonic Hall was on the third floor. Farmers received “chits” to purchase personal supplies in exchange for the farm products they deliver. Mr Ware’s name was famous all over the United States and Europe for his maple syrup and maple sugar. In 1893 he received a gold medal at the Chicago World’s Fair for his maple products.
