Q. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

13 East Main Street 1883 Queen Anne style

The Congregational church, established in 1780, was the first organized church in town. Until the formation of other churches, citizens selected the Congregational minister at town meeting and were required to pay taxes to support the church, unless they could prove they attended in neighboring towns. Both town meetings and church services were held in a log meetinghouse erected that year on the old town common. the present building replaced one that burned on this site in 1882.
