X. OLD RED MILL
18 North Main Street 1903 Industrial
When the village center was moved from Lisle Hill to Mill Hollow in 1833, Richard Waste has been operating his lumber mill here on the Deerfield River for five years. The mill became known as the Wilmington Grain and Lumber Company when it added grain grinding to its business in 1888. In the 1890s the Readsboro chair Company manufactured chair stock in the mill, until a fire destroyed it around 1900. In 1903 the Choate Manufacturing Company, which produced school desks and other school products like blackboard pointers and rulers, built a new mill. This venture would last only a few years before the mill returned to sawing lumber.
